CLUTCHS,

this is a c clip its used to give you some free play, i learnt that you need atleast 20mm of free play for good clutch engagement,

this is where the clutch wire goes,

this is the clutch wire, this was quite easy to get off.

to get to the clutch we had to take the gearbox off, one person was holding it while two people un did the bolts, and once the gearbox was it was quite simple.

this after we got the gear box off, and now we access the clutch housing, and start taking that off.

thier is the gearbox and the input shaft for the gearbox,

this is your clutch plate and clutch housing, we had to be really careful taking the clutch housing, because we didnt want the clutch plate falling on the floor and being damaged, but once we got it out, we saw chips on the clutch plate it was in pretty bad condition.

this is the fly wheel, we found not faults with it.

this the gear box inputshaft, but we call it a dummie shaft to make sure everything is in a straight line, we can fit the gearbox correctly, over all, we found noo faults with our clutch expct for the chips from being droped,
this a basically a automatic gear box. the torque convertor connects to the engine, it has a turbine, a stator and a impaler, and oil under pressure causes a rotary motion inside the torque convertor, which then turns the inputshaft to the transmission, then that power goes to your wheels form a differtential, which then makes you move. thats my basic understanding on how an automatic transimission works,

INTRODUCTION

this is about automatic transmissions, i have never in my life seen or tryed to find out how it works. so i was looking forward to. we learnt that automatic car has a torque convertor, had no clue wat that was before this ethier, but by the end of it had a fair amount of knowledge on how a torque convertor works and why we have it, just below is a series of photos we took while taking apart our automatic gearbox.

Automatic transmissions

this is a automatic transmission with the oil pan off, for that we had to unscrew bolts and placed them together in a ice cream container so we dont lose any, all the parts are labeled so you know what thier called,

this is wat the transmission looks like wit all the parts out and tha output shalft off,
this is where the input shaft fits in and were servos, brake bands, parking gear, valve body and planetary gear set. it was quite tricky to pull the brake bands out but we managed. the planetary gear set was a lil heavy for its size.

this is the input shaft, this connected to the torque convertor, to open this up we took of a couple screws and inspected if thier was any fault or sign of wear and tear on th

this the valve body, pretty much the heart of the transmission. A valve body pretty much contains small hydraulic pistons and cylinders. The Fluid enters the cylinder under pressure and forces the pistons to move to engage the bands or clutches.

In the photo are the oil feed pipes which carry the oil from the valve body,we had to be really carefull with cause you cant buy them, thier all custom made and if any one of them gets damaged. you wil hav to make it.

this one of the servos, the servo helps control the brake bands, mostly for high gears like 3rd and overdrive. it works by the fluid pressure from the valve body and is a spring loaded assembly.

this is just another photo of the servo from top tho. you can see the spring i was taking about in the last photo, it was easy to get out of the transmission case but had a lota grease on it, thier was a lil piece of metal which goes between the servo and the brake, we had to be really without and made sure me did'nt lose it.

this a govener its job is to sense the speed, it goes on the output shaft, this had to be the easiest part to get off, but the most amazing one, how this can tell what your speed is. i found it quite suprising.

this the planetary gear set, with the sun gear in it, this was the most trickest part to get back in the transmission when we finshed, the planetary gear set is one of the most importants parts in a automatic transmission as it creates all the different gear ratios,

this inside the planetary gear set, after we took the sun gear out. you can see the gears around the sun gear, i found quite simple why its called a planetary gear set, thier positioned like the sun and the planets around it.

this is just another photo of the planetary gear set with the sun gear.

this the front clutch, with it brake band around it. this had to be the most annoying part to put back, with all the plates inside it, they all had to be in a straight line, it was quite fustrating, but we used a small screw driver to allign it all up.

this the brake band which goes over planetary gear set assembly, this is also controlled by a servo, we didnt have much problem with taking the brake bands out, exepct they got stuck at time inside the transmission case,

this the case for the output shaft, it only had about 4 bolts that need to be opened.

this the oil pan, this had 14 bolts, it holds the oil in the transmission.

this is how the parking gear and planetary gear set sit inside the transmission, the gear jus above my hand is the parking gear. which as a lil clip which locks it when you put the car in park.
\

this the sun gear, it fit in planetary gear set, and is a quite important part.

Introduction.

This is what we did in class and how we took apart the transmission and how you check every componet for any faults, we found out how every gear is engaged and how they work, for example when a small gear on a large gear. wil mean more torque, eg: 1st gear but a large gear on a small gear. will mean more speed with less torque, eg: 4th gear because then the engine will jus need to keep it at one speed, as for when you start off in the 1st gear then the engine will need more torque to get the car rolling and all that weight moving. we also learned the range of bearings thier are and springs, each one of them is different and different how perform, we learnt different cuts on gears like straight cut gear teeths and herringbone and whole other heap,

Today we learnt how a manual gearbox works and why you would open a transmission. It'l most probly be because there is something wrong with the gears or clutch.

this is gone be the transmission we'r check for any damage or faults with the gears,

This is a image of the transmission after we took the back cover off which covers the fifth gear.
this after we took the gear shifter off, and we used a screw driver to ingage to gears to lock the fifth gear. The bolt holding the fifth was realy hard to get off.

this is after we took the shift fork off, which is used to engage the gears.

this is after we got the shift fork out, now we were ready to get the fifth gear off. for that we needed a  spical tool called a gear puller.

this is the tool we used to get off the fifth gear, you had to be realy patient with it so you dont end up damaging or breaking the fifth gear,

this your gear input and output shafts,i'm holding the input shaft which has your 3rd and 4rd driver gears and has 1st and 2nd driven gears. The output shaft has the 1st and 2nd driver gears which mesh in with the 1st and 2nd driven gears on the input shaft, you use a fueler gauge and messure the gap between the driver gears on the output and input shafts.

this is when we finshed checking the transmission for any damage or faults and we assmbled it back together and we were finsh after we have checked and made sure all the part are put back correctly and made sure we can stil select gears,

transmission and driveline.

This is a image of how the engine is connected to the rear wheel, in a rear wheel driven car. The input shaft is between the engine and the transmission. The output shaft is attached to the drive shaft, which then is connected to tha differential which then turns the wheel.the transmission converts torque made my the engine and turns into speed.for example when your in first gear you have more torque but less speed because you have a small gear turning a large gear, but when your in the top gear for instant 5th gear you have a large input gear on a small output gear. which means less torque and more speed.
